Microsoft Word : Word count

You may need to show word count statistics. 
Perhaps you have been given a limit on how many words you are allowed within a document. 
You can easily count the words in your document with one of Word’s features called Word Count.

To do a Word Count

1. Choose Tools
2. Word Count – the following dialogue box appears

Tip

You can use the following keyboard shortcuts

Control + Shift + G displays the Word Count dialogue box
Control + Shift + R conducts a recount to update the statistics

The dialogue box contains a Show Toolbar button.  Click on this button to display the following toolbar

You can perform word counts on selected text by selecting the text you want to count and then clicking on the Recount button on the Word Count tool bar.
